Trinity Student-Athlete Wins NCAA Jim McKay Graduate Scholarship

Trinity University senior student-athlete Thomas Melina Raab has been named a recipient of the NCAA's 2026 Jim McKay Graduate Scholarship, the organization announced this week.

Melina Raab, a member of Trinity's men's cross country and track and field programs, will receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship recognizing excellence in academics, athletics and a demonstrated commitment to a career in sports communications or media.

The Jim McKay Graduate Scholarship is awarded annually to one male and one female student-athlete nationwide, across all NCAA divisions. Established in 2008, the scholarship honors the legacy of pioneering sports broadcaster Jim McKay, celebrating leadership, integrity, and impactful storytelling in sports media. The NCAA selects Jim McKay Scholarship recipients through a competitive national process evaluating academic achievement, athletic participation, leadership, and long-term career goals in sports communication.

Melina Raab is the third Trinity student-athlete in recent years to win the Jim McKay award. Sam Miller '25 received the award last year; Abby Holland received it in 2020.

A distance runner, Melina Raab has earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors and has been recognized six times on conference academic honor rolls during his collegiate career. He has posted or contributed to five top-five times in Trinity program history and helped lead the Tigers to multiple conference championships in cross country and track and field.

In the classroom, Melina Raab has combined his academic and professional interests through research and writing centered on sports and society. His honors thesis examined the evolution of media coverage of Black athlete activism since the 1968 Olympic protests by Tommie Smith and John Carlos. He also authored research exploring the 1936 Olympic Games as a tool of Nazi propaganda.

Professionally, Melina Raab has gained experience as a writer for Trinity athletics, authored feature profiles for USA Basketball, and served as a communications assistant for the San Antonio Spurs. He has also completed internships with San Antonio Sports and The Nature Conservancy.

"Sports are a microcosm of society, and athletes are more than just figures with a ball in their hands," Melina Raab said. "Jim McKay's legacy of humanizing coverage and his understanding of sports as something larger than competition helped set me on the path I'm on today."

Melina Raab plans to pursue a master's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Hussman School of Journalism and Media, concentrating in theory and research.
