Towuti, October 8, 2025 - As part of its long-term commitment to recovery following the oil pipeline leak incident in Lioka Village, Towuti District, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale) continues to prioritize transparency, scientific approaches, and open dialogue with the community. Through a community outreach event held in Timampu Village, the company reinforced its responsible and measured efforts in social and environmental recovery.
Since the incident occurred on August 23, 2025, PT Vale has adopted a science-based response strategy aligned with global standards and sound environmental governance principles. The emergency response period, which lasted until September 12, 2025, focused on oil spill mitigation, containment of affected areas, and social mapping to ensure fair and verified handling for all impacted residents.
Joint mapping conducted with local government and stakeholders identified social impacts across six villages - Lioka, Langkea Raya, Baruga, Wawondula, Matompi, and Timampu - covering rice fields, fish ponds, gardens, livestock, and wells. The recovery scheme and compensation disbursement plan were agreed upon by the East Luwu Regency Government and village heads, and communicated to residents starting in early September.
This commitment was further solidified through a symbolic handover of compensation funds on October 2, 2025, at the Towuti District Office, witnessed by East Luwu Regent Irwan Bachri Syam and various stakeholders. The compensation process is now underway in stages, accompanied by field verification to ensure all decisions are data-driven and accountable.
Although the emergency phase has concluded, PT Vale emphasizes that recovery is not merely a reactive phase, but a long-term commitment that will continue until all community rights are fulfilled. To ensure clarity and transparency, the company held follow-up outreach sessions in Matompi and Timampu Villages, inviting residents to receive comprehensive information on mechanisms, verification stages, and compensation entitlements.
Endra Kusuma, Head of External Relations of PT Vale, stated that the company fully understands the concerns of the community and remains present on the ground to listen to their aspirations.
"We are here not only to explain, but also to listen. This outreach is part of our responsibility to ensure every affected resident understands their rights and actively participates in the recovery process. We want every step to be honest, transparent, and fair," he said following the outreach event in Timampu Village (October 8).
Endra added that PT Vale is expanding its public communication efforts by combining face-to-face forums with targeted engagement of specific groups, such as farmers and fishers, to ensure messages and data are comprehensively received.
"We welcome feedback and criticism, as long as it aims to accelerate recovery. The support of the local government, especially the East Luwu Regent and his team, is a crucial foundation for the success of this process," he added.
Timampu Village Head, Samsul, welcomed PT Vale's efforts to ensure community involvement at every stage of the recovery.
"This outreach is a concrete step to accelerate verification and compensation disbursement. The sooner the community understands the mechanism, the sooner recovery can be fully implemented," he said.
For PT Vale, the success of recovery is not measured by the end of the emergency phase alone, but by the restoration of trust, community welfare, and environmental sustainability in Towuti. All processes are carried out in collaboration with the community, academic institutions, and government, ensuring that every policy and decision is based on scientific data, social empathy, and sound governance principles.
With this spirit of collaboration, PT Vale reiterates its core message: "Sustainable recovery can only be achieved together - through honesty, openness, and a shared sense of responsibility to both people and the environment."
