TWO-ALARM RESIDENTIAL FIRE
Sunnyvale, CA - On Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, at approximately 10:43 a.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) received reports of a structure fire at an eight-unit apartment complex located at 1642 Kirkland Drive.
Officers arrived on scene at approximately 10:47 a.m. and observed heavy flames and smoke coming from the northeast corner of the complex. Fire crews initiated an aggressive fire attack and requested a second alarm at approximately 10:50 a.m. to obtain additional resources. The fire was brought under control at approximately 11:44 a.m.
Preliminary information indicates that three of the eight units sustained significant fire and smoke damage, and the building as a whole was damaged.
There were no reported civilian or officer injuries. Twenty-four residents were displaced because of the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
