Council condemns tear gas at protests, calls for ongoing community action

Portland City Council strongly condemns the use of chemical munitions, including tear gas, by federal agents against our community and is horrified by the harm caused to Portlanders exercising their First Amendment rights. Gassing our community is unacceptable. ICE's dangerous and reckless use of force is a threat to public safety, our health, and our environment. We are looking at every possible option at the state and local level to hold federal agents accountable for harm inflicted upon our communities.

Every Portlander has the right to protest nonviolently without fear. No protest should be met with chemical weapons. As we stand together against the federal government's campaign of terror, we encourage our community to continue taking action to protect each other.
