Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement upon the conclusion of his visit to Japan, Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (Seoul, 21.07.2026)

We had the opportunity to visit the Republic of Korea and hold extensive consultations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and his delegation on further developing our bilateral relations and on pursuing a common approach in addressing international and regional challenges. Greece and the Republic of Korea are bound by historical ties dating back to the Korean War, more than 75 years ago, when Greece, under the flag of the United Nations, made a decisive contribution to the consolidation of democracy and prosperity during exceptionally difficult times.

This concludes a series of contacts and visits that began in Japan, continued in Vietnam and concluded in the Republic of Korea. The common denominator of these visits to the three countries is that they are emerging powers on the regional and international diplomatic stage: Japan and the Republic of Korea in the Indo-Pacific, with which the European Union maintains very strong ties, and Vietnam, within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). What unites us is our commitment to International Law and, in particular, the International Law of the Sea. We share a common understanding on issues relating to the key regional and international challenges.

What we will do is coordinate even more closely by undertaking initiatives so as to ensure the universal acceptance that no concessions can be made with regard to International Law, and in particular to the International Law of the Sea.

In particular, with Japan, Vietnam and the Republic of Korea, we also discussed issues relating to international trade. Greece will maintain a strong presence, particularly through its shipping community. Our shipping sector has a very strong footprint in Southeast Asia. We will develop further initiatives covering the new forms of shipping, namely green shipping, innovation, research and, of course, the training of seafarers.

Building on its strong presence in the United Nations Security Council and guided by its commitment to international multilateralism, Greece is broadening its partnerships and continuously strengthening its presence on the international stage.
