MFSH elevates robotic surgery with da Vinci 5 robot

Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital (MFSH) has been at the forefront of robotic-assisted surgery since 2010, when it became one of the first hospitals in the region to make substantial investments in da Vinci surgical technology. With precise instruments, intuitive controls and capabilities beyond normal human reach, robotic surgery with da Vinci technology offers lower complication rates and offers quicker recovery time. They've elevated that level of care in the operating room (OR) once again with the addition of the da Vinci 5.

The da Vinci 5 is Intuitive Surgical's latest model of the da Vinci robotic surgical system. It boasts better resolution, visualization and enhanced ergonomics - features that translate directly back into better outcomes for patients.

"All of us in the OR are excited to use the da Vinci 5. It offers so many phenomenal features," said Timothy Adams, MD, colorectal and general surgeon at MFSH. "The tactile feedback is phenomenal - I can actually feel the resistance from the instruments, offering me live time feedback on tissue I'm operating on."

Communication features foster multidisciplinary collaboration in the operating room, allowing colleagues to call-in directly to the procedure, offering advice and answering questions live-time. The da Vinci 5 also records all procedures - a valuable tool for surgeons sharing breakthrough cases or wishing to learn more about a recent surgery. The new robot also has greater applications for new surgeons.

"The learning curve for [the da Vinci 5] is a lot less," Dr. Adams explains. "For surgeons who couldn't do laparoscopic procedures, the robot came out and now that surgeon can do robotic. It makes it easier and more intuitive to learn that surgery. Not to mention the applications for residents."

MFSH added two of the da Vinci 5 consoles to their OR, replacing one of the robotic surgery units that was given to Olean General Hospital (OGH) to kick start their robotic surgery program. With the addition of the da Vinci 5, MFSH continues to advance surgical care-bringing leading-edge technology, expanded capabilities and better outcomes to patients across Western New York.
