The EU Arctic Forum and Dialogues conclude with EU Commissioner Kadis’ visit to the Saami Parliament and policy recommendations from Arctic Youth and Saami

As the EU Arctic Forum, Indigenous Peoples' Dialogue, and Arctic Youth Dialogue concluded, the EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis visited the Saami Parliament in Finland, located in Inari. This was the first time that an EU Commissioner visited this chamber, which was partly funded by the EU. EU Commissioner Kadis and his team met with the acting President Tuomas Aslak Juuso.

The discussion focused on how the EU could help Saami people in Finland with existing EU programmes supporting climate adaptation and regional development, in line with EU competences and observing the principle of subsidiarity.

After a fruitful youth policy dialogue, youth representatives from the Arctic and EU countries presented a set of policy recommendations to EU representatives and policymakers. These recommendations focused on sustainable transport, overconsumption, youth entrepreneurship, and the sustainability of industries in the Arctic. The youth representatives highlighted the need to balance the demand for critical raw materials in the Arctic with economic and social prosperity.

The EU will continue to support the sustainable development of the Arctic to the benefit of its communities under the EU Arctic policy.

Insights gathered during the EU Arctic Forum, Indigenous Peoples' Dialogue, and the Arctic Youth Dialogue will serve as a foundation for the EU's future discussions in, on and for the Arctic, ensuring that the EU remains a strong and reliable partner.
