Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, today (25 February) held a meeting with the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, in Dublin. President Milatović is in Dublin to deepen bilateral relations between Ireland and Montenegro ahead of Ireland's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Byrne said: "During my meeting with President Milatović, I reaffirmed Ireland's strong support for Montenegro's journey towards EU membership, particularly as we look ahead to Ireland's EU Presidency later this year. Last July, I had the opportunity to visit Montenegro, where impressive reforms are underway. EU enlargement will be a key focus during Ireland's EU Presidency, and we are determined to support Montenegro, on its EU path."
Minister Byrne continued: "2026 is also a historic year for Montenegro as it marks the twentieth anniversary of their regaining independence. I look forward to seeing the deepening of the bilateral relationship enjoyed by Ireland and Montenegro."
During his visit, President Milatović met with President Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin and visited Trinity College Dublin and St Patrick's Cathedral.
