Shelley Story has been named Vice President for Student Life at Southwestern University, effective June 1. With nearly three decades of experience in higher education and a proven record of student-focused leadership, Story brings to the role a deep understanding of student development, crisis management, and inclusive community building.

Story has been a vital part of the Southwestern community since 2016, serving as Dean of Students and, more recently, expanding her leadership to include the role of Director of Residence Life.

At Southwestern, Story shaped major student life initiatives, including serving as co-chair of the committee that redefined the University’s co-curricular approach. One of the most visible examples of her leadership came during the winter break of 2024, when she successfully led the relocation of 162 students from Mabee Hall. The complex effort required swift coordination, clear communication, and an unwavering commitment to student care. Under her direction, applications for the Resident Assistant position nearly tripled, reflecting increased interest in this key leadership role.

As Deputy Title IX Coordinator, she managed all student cases and oversaw a comprehensive redesign of the University’s Title IX process in response to evolving federal regulations. In 2023, she led a successful effort to revise the Student Handbook, focusing on a philosophy of respect for oneself, others, and the community.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she played a key on-the-ground role in student health and safety, managing weekly testing logistics with care and compassion. She continues to serve as the administrator of the Honor Code process and advisor to the Honor Code Council.

“Shelley’s appointment recognizes her thoughtful, steady leadership and her deep dedication to our students,” said President Laura Skandera Trombley. “She understands that student life is about more than support; it’s about creating opportunities for fun, connection, and personal growth outside the classroom. Her collaborative spirit and student-centered approach will make her an exceptional partner in strengthening relationships across departments and enriching the Southwestern experience.”

Before coming to Southwestern, Story served as Associate Dean for Student Development at Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy. There, she developed a student affairs program from the ground up, creating foundational services and initiatives that supported students’ academic, social, and emotional growth, while overseeing communications with students, families, and university partners both locally and internationally. She has also held student life positions at Texas Christian University and American University.

Throughout her career, Story has been known for her collaborative leadership style, clear communication, and commitment to creating supportive environments. With her wealth of experience, deep institutional knowledge, and unshakable student-first mindset, Story is well-positioned to lead the next chapter of student life at Southwestern University.
