BOISE, ID (May 19, 2026) - The Idaho Department of Insurance (DOI) announced today that Kevin Griffin of Blackfoot, Idaho, pleaded guilty to one felony count of insurance fraud after filing a claim for damage that occurred prior to his ownership of the vehicle.

Griffin purchased a 2014 Freightliner semi-tractor and obtained a commercial insurance policy through Progressive Insurance. In October 2023, he submitted a claim to Progressive for damage to the rear and passenger-side areas of the sleeper cab. During the claims review, Progressive discovered that the same damage had been reported in 2021 by the vehicle's previous owner.

The Idaho Department of Insurance Fraud Unit investigated and confirmed that the damage existed before Griffin purchased the Freightliner. Griffin later admitted to knowingly filing the fraudulent claim.

On March 25, 2026, in Bingham County, Griffin was sentenced to:

  • One year fixed, two years indeterminate, three years unified, suspended, with supervised probation
  • 15 days of jail time
  • 50 hours of community service
  • 180 days of discretionary jail time
  • A $1,000 fine plus court costs

"The integrity of Idaho's insurance marketplace relies on truthful reporting," said Director Dean L. Cameron. "When someone knowingly files a false claim, it harms every policyholder. We will continue working to ensure those actions have consequences."

The Idaho Department of Insurance encourages anyone who suspects insurance fraud to report it at doi.idaho.gov or by calling the insurance fraud hotline at 1-866-939-7226.
