Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) announced Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) will receive $1,760,000 in funding to implement an advanced manufacturing training program. The grant was awarded from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.
The grant will fund a new Operational Skills Certificate, a Workforce Pell-aligned short-term program designed to prepare students for roles in advanced manufacturing, automation, and battery production. These sectors are becoming increasingly critical for American economic competitiveness, domestic supply chain resilience, and clean-energy leadership. The funding will also be used to expand and modernize TMCC's Advanced Manufacturing lab.
"To be competitive in the 21st Century, the United States needs to prepare young people to work in critical sectors like advanced manufacturing and battery production," said Senator Cortez Masto. "With this new short-term certification program, TMCC will be at the forefront of training America's next generation of innovators and problem solvers."
Senator Cortez Masto has consistently worked to ensure that Nevada's students can attain a higher education in the form that best meets their needs and career goals. She has been a strong supporter of Pell Grants, which are need-based education grants for low-income and working students, and has supported legislation to allow Pell Grants to be used for high-quality short-term job training programs. She has secured funding to help develop clean energy jobs and support Nevada's battery supply chain, to support the construction of a new workforce training center in East Las Vegas, to support the development of the recently opened Westside training center, and to train more Nevada teachers.
