HP Brings Enterprise-Grade Android to Retail and Hospitality

Retail and hospitality organizations are modernizing at different speeds and along different technological paths. Some continue to run mission-critical Windows environments. Others are moving to Android, cloud-native applications, self-service experiences, and mobile-first workflows. Most are managing a mix, balancing operational capability against complexity and cost. Whichever path they're on, stores, restaurants, and hotels demand durable hardware, deep peripheral integration, disciplined security, predictable lifecycle support, and management that fit the systems they already run. Most Android devices in the category weren't designed to that standard.

Today, HP is announcing the HP Engage One Pro G2q, an enterprise-grade Android all-in-one point-of-sale platform powered by the Qualcomm Dragonwing® Q-6690 processor and running Android 16 with Google Mobile Services. It's built on the same enterprise industrial design as the Windows-based HP Engage One Pro G2 - giving customers a true OS choice without compromising on the hardware standard, peripheral ecosystem, or manageability that define an Engage device.

Customer choice, not another platform decision

With this launch, HP now supports one of the broadest sets of operating systems in retail, including Windows, Windows IoT, Linux, and Android. No single operating system is right for every customer, workload, site architecture, or stage of modernization.

HP's Android strategy is not about moving customers onto another platform or creating another operational silo. It's about helping customers choose the right platform for the right workload, while maintaining a consistent operational model across their environment. The launch of G2q extends that commitment, giving enterprise-grade Android on a platform built to the same standards as the HP Engage family they already know and trust.

What HP adds above Android


Android adoption continues to grow because organizations want greater flexibility, fast deployment cycles, lower cost of ownership, and access to a broader application ecosystem. However, retail and hospitality customers need to ensure their Android strategy has the right level of security, manageability, lifecycle support, peripheral integration and operational consistency. That's where HP adds value.

Retail peripheral enablement

Retail applications communicate with receipt printers, barcode scanners, line displays, cash drawers, magnetic stripe readers, and payment devices. Those integrations have been written against JavaPOS and OPOS since the 1990s, and there is no widely adopted Android equivalent, which is among the most common reasons Android projects stall in retail. HP's Android JPOS Service adapts JavaPOS concepts for Android environments, with consistent APIs and drivers for common retail peripherals, peripheral firmware update capability, and receipt printing support for Android including web and progressive web applications. The result is reduced application rewrite requirements and simpler adoption for software vendors and customers alike.

Enterprise management

HP exposes OEM configuration settings to enterprise management systems, and provides provisioning tools, over-the-air update control, and MDM policy integration. HP complements customer investments in platforms such as Microsoft Intune, SOTI, and Workspace ONE rather than requiring customers to replace them.

Enterprise security

The G2q carries the discipline HP's commercial customers expect: HP-signed images, secure boot and verified boot, hardware-backed security where available, no root access in production images, and security patching on a published lifecycle.

Enterprise-grade performance and flexibility


The G2q is designed for continuous operation in demanding environments, with fanless construction, integrated peripheral options, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, NFC, and on-device AI processing for vision and voice workloads at the counter. It is rated IP44 at the head unit and tested to MIL-STD-810G.

Modernization without disruption


Most retail and hospitality estates are already mixed, spanning point of sale, kiosks, tablets, handhelds, displays, and edge systems across several operating systems. Customers should not have to introduce a separate operational model every time they adopt a new platform.

Adopting Android on a customer's terms means meeting them wherever they are: evaluating Android, migrating selected workloads without a forced hardware refresh, or already operating Android and in need of a stronger enterprise foundation. It means protecting existing investments rather than stranding them. Over time, HP will extend Android across all-in-one, modular, and mobile form factors while maintaining a common foundation for security, lifecycle management, peripheral integration, and enterprise operations.
