The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) today reported the detection of Cache Valley Virus (CVV) in mosquitoes collected in Lancaster County. Although there have been no reported cases of the virus in humans in the county, residents are advised by the LLCHD to keep taking precautions against mosquitoes.
CVV is a mosquito borne disease that is endemic to the United States. Human
disease from CVV is rare with fewer than 10 cases ever reported nationally as of May 2025. CVV can result in neuroinvasive disease such as encephalitis and meningitis, long-term health effects, or death.
Although it is an uncommon disease, CVV is a severe disease, and it is important to protect yourself against mosquito bites by following these precautions:
There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat CVV. Initial symptoms can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and sometimes rash. Severe symptoms (encephalitis or meningitis) include stiff neck, confusion, loss of coordination, difficulty speaking, or seizures.
The Health Department also reminds residents to reduce mosquitoes in and around their homes:
