WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Chairman of the U.S. Senate, Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, demanded accountability from multiple state governors for failing to protect American families and taxpayers from fraud in federal child care funding. Cassidy previously led the entire U.S. Senate Republican Conference launching an investigation into lame-duck Minnesota Governor Tim Walz amid widespread reports of child care fraud in his state.
"These governors seem to be content with wasting billions of American's hard-earned dollars on fraudulent federal child care assistant programs. This leaves children in need worse off," said Dr. Cassidy. "We need to protect the hard-working families who pay into the system and the families who rely on it."
Oregon, New York, and Michigan are among the worst offenders with improper payment rates of 35.12 percent, 17.73 percent, and 12.25 percent, respectively. This amount of waste is unacceptable and entirely preventable. By contrast, Texas' rate of misspent dollars is only 0.4 percent.
As HELP Chairman, Cassidy is leading efforts to stop fraud in federal funding, launching a Committee task force and holding a hearing.
