Minister of Foreign Affairs receives a courtesy call by Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan to Thailand
On 8 October 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a discussion with H.E. Mr. Hassan Abdelsalam Omer, Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan to the Kingdom of Thailand, with residence in Kuala Lumpur. Also in attendance was Ms. Wanalee Lohpechra, Acting Director-General of the Department of South Asia, Middle East and African Affairs.
The Foreign Minister stated that Thailand attaches great importance to strengthening relations with countries in the African region, including the Sudan, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and development cooperation, under the framework of the Thailand - Africa Initiative (TAI), which serves as a strategic approach to advancing and deepening Thailand's engagement with the African region. The Ambassador provided an update on the latest developments on the situation in the Sudan and expressed appreciation to the Thai government for not supporting the resolution that was deemed unfavorable to the Sudan during the vote at the United Nations Human Rights Council on 6 October 2025. He also reiterated Sudan's intention to enhance bilateral relations with Thailand across various dimensions, particularly in national reconstruction, recognizing Thailand as a key partner country that has previously contributed to the management and maintenance of Sudan's thermal power plants.
Both sides exchanged views on the operations of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in the Sudan and the ongoing unrest in the country. The Thai side expressed its hope for a return to normalcy and the achievement of lasting peace in the Sudan.
