WHEELING, W.Va., March 26 - A poster submission by a Wheeling University Laut Honors' student was recognized by the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics at its annual conference at Stonewall Resort.
Meiraf Abera, a freshman Business Administration major from Ethiopia, was a semi-finalist in the 2026 West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics poster contest. She was the top winner in the college division in the statewide competition, receiving a blue ribbon and gift card for her efforts.
"I was proud and happy that my poster was recognized at a high level in a subject that I am passionate about. Winning also meant a lot, because I was able to represent Wheeling University in this statewide competition," Abera explained.
Abera's poster addressed how patterns in mathematics can lead to endless possibilities and creativity. "My poster showed how math is full of patterns and formulas that connect to each other. I used different equations and designs to represent how those patterns can turn into something bigger. The poster captured the idea that math isn't just random numbers-it's organized and meaningful, and it can create something creative
Sue Hvizdos, director of Laut Honors College, noted, "This is the first time that Wheeling University students have participated in the poster competition. I am extremely proud of Mieraf's poster theme and design. I encourage all interested students to submit entries next year."Several members of the Laut Honors College seminar class submitted a poster for this year's competition. Each member design a poster that captured a theme centered around math, Hvizdos said.
