Human Rights Council 51st Session of the Universal Periodic Review: The Federated States of Micronesia

Ministry Statements & Speeches: 19 January 2026

Delivered by Senior Multilateral Adviser Clare van Bohemen Hunter.

Mr President,

New Zealand warmly welcomes the delegation from the Federated States of Micronesia.

We commend the Federated States of Micronesia for its commitment to advancing gender equality - including its leadership in developing the Micronesian Gender Equality Framework in collaboration with its sub-regional partners.

In the spirit of constructive dialogue, New Zealand recommends that the Federated States of Micronesia:

  1. Continue strengthening the implementation of the National and State Policy to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls by ensuring adequate resources, training, monitoring and enforcement mechanisms at all levels.
  2. Ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
  3. Ratify the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
  4. Establish an independent National Human Rights Institution in compliance with the Paris Principles.

We thank the delegation for their participation today and with them a successful review.

Thank you, Mr President.
