Washington D.C., January 18, 2025 - The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship of the Argentine Republic, Gerardo Werthein, participated in the Western Hemisphere Security Forum held at The University Club in Washington D.C. This event brought together prominent regional leaders and U.S. officials to discuss security challenges in the Western Hemisphere.
Among the attendees were key officials designated to serve in the incoming administration of President Trump, future representatives of strategic security areas, and individuals with proven expertise in the field. The forum was hosted by the Executive Director of the Center for a Secure Free Society. Also in attendance were the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, and his Foreign Minister, Rubén Ramírez.
In his address, Foreign Minister Werthein emphasized the commitment of President Javier Milei and his administration to positioning Argentina as "the freest country in the world." He highlighted the achievements in reducing the size of the state, lowering inflation, and fostering positive economic growth prospects as pillars of the country's transformation. He also underscored the ongoing process of deregulation and modernization, which is removing bureaucratic obstacles and facilitating investment and economic development.
Foreign Minister Werthein also pointed out the importance of Argentina achieving a fiscal surplus in such a short period, a milestone unprecedented in the country's recent history. He noted that these accomplishments are also reflected in the significant reduction in inflation, stating that in December 2023, wholesale inflation was 54% monthly, whereas by December 2024, it had dropped to just 0.8% monthly. This dramatic change underscores the impact of the responsible fiscal and monetary policies implemented by President Milei's administration.
In the area of security, the Foreign Minister highlighted efforts to strengthen national security and combat terrorism, which are priorities for the current administration.
The Foreign Minister also emphasized the role of Argentina's strategic allies, particularly the United States and Israel, with whom the country maintains solid cooperation in security, counterterrorism, and regional stability. "Argentina deeply values the support and collaboration of the United States and Israel, fundamental partners in building a future of freedom, security, and prosperity," stated Werthein.
