Reed Statement on Netanyahu Rejecting Trump’s Gaza Plan

CRANSTON, RI - After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a U.S.-backed 15-point plan to disarm Hamas and withdraw Israeli troops from Gaza, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement:

"This is yet more failed leadership from both Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. They are both impediments to lasting, durable peace. It is time for a drastically new approach in Gaza that significantly boosts humanitarian aid as well as a recommitment to a two-state solution by all parties."

"Prime Minister Netanyahu's rejection of the Board of Peace plan sets back a process that took months to build and that Hamas has already conditionally accepted. This is a rejection of the framework itself, made three months before an Israeli election, with aid delivery and regional stability all hanging in the balance.

"The United States has invested significant diplomatic and military capital in this process. Congress deserves a clear explanation from this administration of what happens next, what leverage the United States still has, and how this rejection affects American forces and interests in the region. I am seeking answers to these questions."
