Disclosure of the Police Officers’ Names in Raymond, New Hampshire Officer-Involved Shooting Incident

Concord, NH - Attorney General John M. Formella announces the identity of the police officers who discharged firearms during a shooting incident on the evening of April 4, 2026, in Raymond, New Hampshire, that ended in Matthew J. Massey (age 38) taking his own life.

Just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2026, law enforcement was called to a home on Ham Road for reports that a man was shooting at his family members. Officers responded and located Matthew J. Massey (age 38), who then fired at officers. One of his gunshots struck a Nottingham Police Officer and inflicted non-life-threatening injuries. At that time, Sergeant Rui Barbosa of the Fremont Police Department discharged his weapon to defend himself, the Nottingham officer, and the family members in his immediate area. Sgt. Barbosa has approximately 6 years of service with the Fremont Police Department.

Later that evening, Mr. Massey fired at police officers a second time after members of the Southern New Hampshire Special Operations Unit (SNHSOU) and the New Hampshire State Police Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (NHSP SWAT) called out for him to surrender after discovering his hidden location in a heavily wooded area. At that time, the five SNHSOU officers who returned fire included Sergeant Michael Lambert (17 years of service with the Merrimack Police Department), Detective Kevin Manuele (10 years of service with the Merrimack Police Department), Sergeant Greg Iworsky (17 years of service with the Windham Police Department), Corporal Daniel Boudreau (5 years of service with the Windham Police Department), and Sergeant Nicholas Fiorentio (7 years of service with the Bedford Police Department). Additionally, the seven NHSP SWAT officers who returned fire included Sergeant Michael Cedrone (22 years of service with NHSP), Sergeant Nicholas Cyr (21 years of service with NHSP), Detective/Sergeant Stefan Czyzowski (20 years of service with NHSP), Trooper Tyler Dodds (10 years of service with NHSP), Trooper Kevin Dobson (9 years of service with NHSP), Trooper Matthew Dushame (7 years of service with NHSP), and Trooper Jacob Hunt (4 years of service with NHSP).

Even though While Mr. Massey took his own life and the officers' use of deadly force did not inflict death or serious bodily injury to his person, the Department of Justice will conclude its investigation with a brief report to detail the sequence of the events once all evidence has been thoroughly examined. Following the review of the evidence so far, however, the Attorney General makes a preliminary finding that the use of deadly force by officers was justified as officers fired at Mr. Massey after he began shooting at them with a rifle both in the afternoon and evening on April 4, 2026.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. No further updates are expected until that report is released.
