City of Joliet Seeking Nominations for Annual Historic Preservation Awards

JOLIET, Ill. - The City of Joliet is now accepting nominations for its Annual Historic Preservation Awards, with a submission deadline of Friday, April 10, 2026. The awards program recognizes properties that have undergone recent preservation, restoration and rehabilitation, as well as individuals and organizations that have demonstrated a dedicated commitment to the field of historic preservation.

Now in its 18th year, the program has recognized outstanding preservation efforts across the Joliet community since 2008. Last year's honorees include the Patrick Haley Mansion and the homeowners of 900 N. Raynor Ave., both recognized for their exemplary historic preservation work.

"Every year this city ages, there are new opportunities to preserve historic places and maintain the cultural heritage of our neighborhoods," said Mayor Terry D'Arcy. "Recognizing people who have dedicated their time to preserving these places is almost as important as the preservation work itself. If you know someone that does this vital preservation work in Joliet or know of a project, I strongly encourage you to submit a nomination."

Joliet's architecture reflects the city's rich heritage and contributes significantly to its character and identity. Preserving this architecture enhances Joliet's authenticity, sense of place and overall quality of life. Historic preservation also delivers meaningful economic benefits, including stabilizing and increasing property values and promoting economic vitality and sustainability through the rehabilitation and reuse of historic properties.

Nomination forms are available on the City's Historic Preservation Commission website at joliet.gov/historicpreservation and can be picked up in-person at the Community Development Department at City Hall (150 W. Jefferson St.). Award winners will be recognized at a May 2026 City Council meeting in recognition of National Historic Preservation Month.
