SAN DIEGO - The Caltrans I-5 Asset Management Project team will close all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) from State Route 52 (SR-52) to Mission Bay Drive starting Friday, September 5, at 9:00 p.m. to Monday, September 8, at 5:00 a.m. to conduct roadwork and culvert replacement.

  • Southbound I-5 motorists are advised to take southbound Interstate 805 (I-805) at Sorrento Valley, connect to southbound State Route 163 (SR-163), connect to westbound Interstate 8 (I-8), then connect to I-5.
  • Vehicles traveling past southbound I-805 will be able to exit and enter I-5 at Genesee Avenue, westbound La Jolla Village Drive, and Nobel Drive.
  • Entrances and exits at Gilman Drive and eastbound La Jolla Village Drive will be closed.
  • Vehicles driving south of Gilman Drive will be detoured to the eastbound SR-52.
  • Vehicles driving westbound on SR-52 will detour to La Jolla Parkway or northbound I-5.
  • Vehicles driving eastbound on La Jolla Parkway will not be able to connect to southbound I-5 and will detour to eastbound SR-52.

Portable changeable message signs will be placed along the routes advising of the closure and suggesting alternate routes.

Businesses near Damon Avenue should anticipate construction noise and lighting during the closure.

Transit

All southbound Metropolitan Transit Service bus routes from La Jolla and University Town Center (UTC) will be running as usual. Bus route 30 travels from La Jolla to Old Town on the west side of I-5, while route 105 travels from UTC to Old Town on the east side of I-5. Parking is available at the Nobel Drive and UTC stations. Blue Line Trolley service will remain available as an alternative to travel from Sorrento Valley to all points south.

This is the first of six full freeway closures for the I-5 Asset Management Project.

The I-5 Asset Management Project will ensure that the southern segment of I-5 remains in a state of good repair while improving ride quality and reducing maintenance needs in the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City from Camino De La Plaza to 0.3 just south of Via De La Valle. This vital effort is focused on preserving existing infrastructure, improving safety, and modernizing the corridor to meet current and future transportation needs.

The project will rehabilitate pavement along the main roadway, shoulders, and freeway ramps to extend the service life of the existing pavement. Beyond resurfacing, the project encompasses a comprehensive range of upgrades designed to enhance performance, safety, and environmental conservation.

The total project cost is $113,745,800, funded by the State Highway Operation Protection Program, with $102,618,300 in Federal funds and $11,127,500 in state funds from SB1.

Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.

The work schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other work-related reasons.
