Baton Rouge, LA - January 17, 2025 - BATON ROUGE, La. - Baton Rouge, La - January 17, 2025 - According to The National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans, East Baton Rouge Parish temperatures will begin to drop significantly on Sunday, potentially remaining below freezing until next Friday. The latest forecast also predicts a 30% chance of winter precipitation Monday night, potentially causing freezing rain and sleet. This winter weather forecast will increase hazardous road conditions going into the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday.
Mayor-President, Sid Edwards advises all residents to be prepared for these winter conditions going into the weekend. "Prepare for this winter weather before it arrives-stock up on essentials, protect people, pets, plants, and pipes, and be sure to stay informed," Edwards emphasized. "By taking a few simple steps now, you can protect your family and property, and prevent emergencies."
These colder temperatures will also increase the use of gas appliances; if these appliances are not working properly it could lead to carbon monoxide (CO) production. Test your CO and smoke detectors to ensure they are in proper working condition. Plan to stay indoors during these prolonged freezing conditions and try to stay off the roadways when possible.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP), in coordination with Mayor Edward's Office, are continuously monitoring the latest forecast and stand ready to activate the Emergency Operations Center if needed. First responders, public works crews, and emergency stakeholders are all making winter weather preparations to protect the safety of East Baton Rouge Parish. Residents are urged to use the following Red Stick Ready winter weather tips when preparing their homes, families, and pets for the upcoming cold temperatures:
Red Stick Ready Winter Weather Tips:
Prepare a Supply Kit - Gather supplies to stay home for several days without power. Include non-perishable food, a flashlight with extra batteries, and a battery-powered radio or television.
Prepare the Pipes - Wrap pipes in unheated areas, turn off the water, and drain exposed hoses. Check pipes for cracks and leaks, and repair any that are compromised. As an added precaution, open any cabinets that hide the pipes under the sink.
Prepare Property - Use caulking and weather stripping to seal gaps around windows and doors. Close the doors and vents of rooms not in use to keep drafts out. Keep window coverings open during the day to take advantage of the sun's heat.
Prevent Home Fires - Keep anything that can burn at least 3' from all heat sources including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, portable heaters, or candles. NEVER use cooking appliances to heat a home.
