Kaleida Health partners with Fujifilm to perform first-ever procedure in United States

Kaleida Health's lung cancer treatment program is redefining what's possible for patients across Western New York. With world-class professionals, groundbreaking treatments and compassionate support programs, patients feel connected, cared for and in the best hands even months after they leave the hospital.

In the past few weeks, Kaleida Health has expanded that program, performing the first surgery of its kind in the United States with a groundbreaking piece of technology.

Kaleida Health partnered with FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation to bring their latest and most advanced scope, the new EB-710US EBU, to Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI). At BGMC/GVI, Sandip Saha, MD, BSC (H), interventional pulmonologist, performed the first non-limited market release use of the scope in the United States.

"We're excited and proud to partner with FUJIFILM as we introduce this new piece of technology to the hospital," said Johnson Scaria, MBA, BSN, BSc, senior director of perioperative services, Kaleida Health. "With its capabilities and advances, it's only going to be a boon for our lung cancer treatment program and the patients that benefit from it."

Dr. Saha performed an endobronchial ultrasound using the EB-710US EBUS scope. This minimally invasive, outpatient procedure is essential in identifying and diagnosing lung cancer, and the scope's improvements over older versions made the process even more streamlined. With a slimmer profile, improved maneuverability and a new design emphasizing peripheral access without sacrificing sampling capability, it is less invasive overall and allows physicians to navigate through more difficult anatomy.

"The EB-710US is one of the largest redesigns of an EBUS scope in a while," said Eric Leon, account executive, FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation. "Rather than incremental improvements, Fuji aimed to rethink what an EBUS scope is and how it interfaces with tissue, resulting in an innovative new product - one with providers and what they need in mind."

For patients, that means less invasive procedures, more accurate test results and even greater peace of mind about the care they're receiving. Combined with Kaleida Health's comprehensive lung cancer program, these advances help patients access expert care closer to home.
