HARRISBURG - Connecting inflation relief with America's 250th birthday celebration, Rep. Eric Davanzo (R-Westmoreland) today announced a proposal to offer $250 birthday checks to Pennsylvania families.
"July Fourth is a special celebration of patriotism, and this is especially important in 2026, as we celebrate America's 250th birthday. Whether July Fourth means hamburgers and hotdogs or parades and fireworks, no Pennsylvanian should go without because of the squeeze of high energy prices, and other inflationary concerns," Davanzo said. "My plan is fiscally sound and makes sure our friends and neighbors can afford to celebrate and enjoy our nation's special moment this Independence Day."
The legislation, titled $250 for America's 250th Act, calls for the $250 checks to be funded by the overage of 2025-26 tax collections, which as of May, is almost $1 billion. According to U.S. Census Bureau information, there are 3.3 million families in the Commonwealth.
"On a long-term basis, if Harrisburg is collecting more than it needs, the General Assembly should be re-writing our antiquated tax laws and there are bills to do that," Davanzo said. "But right now, as Pennsylvania families are finding higher prices on everything from utilities, gasoline and groceries, it makes perfect sense to return tax dollars to those who paid them in the first place."
Davanzo's proposal was circulated to other House members through a co-sponsor invitation.
