September 15, 2026: District Attorney Hochman Announces Death Penalty Won’t Be Sought in Reiner Murder Case

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced today that his office will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents last December in their Brentwood home.

"This decision reflects our careful judgment about the most appropriate path to take in this case and does not diminish the severity of these crimes," District Attorney Hochman said. "I have spoken to the Reiner family and evaluated the mitigating and aggravating factors that are part of special circumstance murder cases. Seeking capital punishment should be reserved for the most egregious instances, and we determined after a thorough review that the death penalty was not the appropriate resolution in this case."

Nick Reiner (dob 9/14/93) was indicted last month on two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.

He has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court on October 7 for a motions hearing in Department 108 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

On Dec. 14, 2025, Reiner is accused of fatally stabbing his parents Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, at their home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. Nick Reiner fled but was arrested later that evening.

If convicted as charged, Reiner faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole.

He is being held on no bail.

Case 26CJCF04440 is being prosecuted by the Major Crimes Division and remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division.

The charges filed in this case are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
