The City of Gaithersburg "Snow Road-eo" returned to the Activity Center at Bohrer Park on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The annual team-building event is geared towards snow removal preparedness for the upcoming winter weather season. This year's event brought back the jurisdictional challenge with the City of Rockville, with each city's best teams facing off in friendly competition for the winning trophy. The event also included the City's own "Championship" portion, with Gaithersburg teams competing against each other.
For the jurisdictional challenge, Gaithersburg and Rockville teams competed in in a timed obstacle course where they negotiated their way through eight obstacle stations along a plotted route. Each team consisted of a snow plow driver and a navigator. The course challenges participants to operate large machinery in very tight spaces, something crews encounter regularly when plowing courts and newer developments with on-street parking.
The winners were based on the average scores of the top four teams from each jurisdiction. With a score of 2,930 points, Gaithersburg took top honors.
For the City's Championship portion, Gaithersburg teams competed in timed, scored events that included a written test, pre-trip truck inspections, and the obstacle course. Travis Testerman and Wayne Watkins came in first place, followed by Justin Storm and Paul Morgan in second, and Mark Smith and Andrew Rosencrantz in third.
As Public Works crews get ready to combat snow, residents are reminded to do their part as well. Not sure who is responsible for plowing which streets in Gaithersburg? The Maryland Department of Transportation maintains an online map service that allows residents to enter a street address and learn which agency (state, county, or local municipality) is responsible for road maintenance. Use the map locator here to see who's responsible for what.
In addition to snow removal, Gaithersburg's Department of Public Works maintains all City facilities, supervises construction, reviews storm water management, sediment control and drainage projects, maintains and beautifies City streets, buildings and parks, administers the City's bulk pickup, recycling and fleet maintenance programs, and a host of other activities.
