Happy Birthday, Dover Motor Speedway: Celebrating 57 Years of The Monster Mile

On July 6, 1969, the green flag waved at a brand-new racetrack in the heart of Delaware. Few could have imagined that more than five decades later, that same one-mile oval would become one of the most recognizable venues in motorsports.

Today, Dover Motor Speedway proudly celebrates its birthday, marking 57 years since the inaugural Mason-Dixon 300 ushered NASCAR's premier series into what would become one of the sport's most iconic tracks.

That first race looked much different than today's modern NASCAR events.

Known then as Dover Downs International Speedway, the facility featured a one-mile asphalt oval surrounded by a horse racing track. A crowd of more than 10,000 fans gathered to witness history as the NASCAR Grand National Series-now the NASCAR Cup Series-visited Delaware for the very first time.

When the checkered flag flew after 300 miles, it was Richard Petty standing in Victory Lane. "The King" led 150 of the race's 300 laps and was the only driver to complete the full distance, winning by an incredible six laps over runner-up Sonny Hutchins. The victory was Petty's 96th career NASCAR Cup Series win and the first of his seven Dover victories.

While Petty captured the first trophy, the race itself marked the beginning of something much bigger.

Since that summer afternoon in 1969, Dover Motor Speedway has become one of NASCAR's cornerstone venues, hosting the NASCAR Cup Series every season since its inaugural race. Through changing eras, legendary drivers and unforgettable finishes, generations of fans have returned to Delaware to watch the sport's biggest stars tackle one of its toughest challenges.

The Speedway itself has evolved dramatically over the years.

What began as an asphalt oval transformed into the concrete racing surface fans know today before the 1995 season, giving rise to the demanding characteristics that helped earn Dover its world-famous nickname: The Monster Mile. Towering above Victory Plaza, the iconic Miles the Monster monument now serves as a symbol of the challenge that has humbled even NASCAR's greatest champions.

From Richard Petty and David Pearson to Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and today's stars, nearly every generation of NASCAR legends has written a chapter of history at Dover. The Speedway has witnessed championship runs, dramatic finishes, record-setting performances and countless unforgettable moments that have helped define the sport.

Yet for many fans, Dover Motor Speedway is about more than statistics.

As Dover Motor Speedway celebrates another birthday, one thing remains unchanged: The Monster Mile is still one of NASCAR's greatest tests, one of the sport's most recognizable landmarks and one of its most entertaining stops on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.
