Bobby Charles Doubles Down on Extreme Agenda with Gingrich Endorsement

Augusta, Maine - Today, Bobby Charles is leaning further into the far-right lane, securing an endorsement from Newt Gingrich, the national Republican extremist known for spearheading the infamous "Contract With America." This harmful proposal, also supported by Rick Bennett, pushed deep cuts to programs for working Maine families, slashed education funding, and prioritized tax breaks for the wealthy. Gingrich also has a long record of opposing reproductive health care and supporting defunding Planned Parenthood. He is a staunch opponent of the Affordable Care Act, which nearly 65,000 Mainerscurrently use for their health care coverage.

The endorsement marks the latest flashpoint in an increasingly chaotic Republican primary, as candidates scramble to prove their loyalty to the most extreme corners of their party in pursuit of national backing - including Donald Trump's. Bobby Charles and Garrett Mason are dueling over Trump's endorsement, with Charles visiting the Trump White Houseto make his case directly and Garrett banking on his interpersonal relationships.

Maine Democratic Party executive director Devon Murphy-Anderson released the following statement:

"If there were any doubt about where Bobby Charles stands, the Newt Gingrich endorsement annihilates it. Charles isn't focused on lowering costs or expanding access to health care. He's aligning himself with the same far-right playbook that has long put wealthy insiders ahead of working Maine families. We deserve a governor who will stand up for us, not someone auditioning for approval from national extremists with a record of pushing harmful, out-of-touch policies."
