The Madison Police Department is hosting a free car seat safety clinic this week.
Families can check to see if their car seat is installed correctly on March 25 at Alliant Energy Center.
"There is no overstating it - having a property installed car seat is the most important factor when talking about children's safety in vehicles," said South District Neighborhood Officer Mitchell Favor.
The Safe Kids Organization, which trains and leads the car seat technicians statewide, finds that more than half of car seats are not used or installed correctly. If used properly, car seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.
"It is important for us to educate and empower caretakers on how essential car seats are. Our officers respond to traffic violations and crashes every day. They can attest to how the misuse or lack of safety equipment can create a high risk of injury," Officer Favor said.
The event will be held at the Alliant Energy Center's New Holland Pavilion #1. It will run 3-6 p.m. and is by appointment only. To schedule, email [email protected] or text/call 608-333-6087.
Free car seats are also available for income-qualifying families.
