Detectives Investigating After Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Train

Seattle police detectives are investigating after a male was struck and killed by a freight train near the Belltown waterfront this morning.

Just before 10 a.m. patrol officers and firefighters responded to reports of a man hit by a BNSF train near Alaskan Way South and Broad Street. The Seattle Fire Department pronounced the man deceased.

Police determined that the male was walking westbound on Broad Street and waited as the Southbound train went by. When he walked across the tracks, he was unaware of the incoming northbound train and was fatally struck.

The train engineer told officers he was traveling 15 miles per hour and was only two miles from his final destination. No criminal investigation was conducted by police.

Detectives with the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) arrived and processed the scene. They collected video evidence corroborating the series of events. If anyone has information, please contact TCIS at 206-684-8923.
