City of St. Petersburg Invites Community to Celebrate New 175-Foot, 15,000-Tile Public Art Mosaic in Sunset Park

Oct 27, 2025 - The City of St Petersburg will formally unveil The Sunshine City Mosaic with a community celebration at Sunset Park (Park St. and Central Ave.) on Wednesday, Oct. 29, starting at 5 p.m. At approximately 175 feet long and 700 sq. ft., the Sunshine City Mosaic is composed of more than 15,000 pieces of tile, depicting nine vignettes of Florida's diverse wildlife.

"As a City of the Arts, it's critical to have public art represented in all pockets of St. Petersburg," said Mayor Kenneth T. Welch. "The Sunshine City Mosaic is not just a public art installation, it's a celebration of our community's spirit and natural beauty. It's exciting to see such an ambitious project come to life, connecting our vibrant artistic culture with the stunning landscapes of our parks on the west side. This mosaic reflects St. Petersburg's commitment to creativity and unity."

The family-friendly event will include mosaic-themed arts and crafts, lawn games, and food and refreshments while supplies last. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and picnic blankets to relax and enjoy the evening in comfort. The event will also feature remarks from the artists behind the mosaic - Laura Spencer, Alex Kaufman and George Retkes - as well as Mayor Welch, Council Chair Copley Gerdes, and Celeste Davis, the City's Director of Arts, Culture, and Tourism.

Limited parking will be available across the street from the park at the former Pasadena Card Club, located at 10 Park St. N. Attendees may also use legal street parking in the surrounding area or consider walking to the park if possible.

The Sunshine City Mosaic joins the more than 90 pieces that make up St. Pete's public art collection. More information about St. Pete's public art listings, locations, and descriptions can be found in the Public Art Archive database at https://www.stpete.org/publicart.
