PROVIDENCE, RI - Ambassador J. William "Bill" Middendorf II passed away Friday at the age of 101. A seventy-plus year resident of Little Compton, Middendorf had an extensive career that included serving as an engineering officer and navigator during World War II, an investment banker, as treasurer of the Republican National Committee, and was appointed to ambassadorships in the Netherlands, the Organization of American States, and the European Union. He also served as the 62nd Secretary of the Navy.
U.S. Senator Jack Reed, the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today paid tribute to Ambassador Middendorf, issuing the following statement:
"Bill Middendorf was a true patriot, a strong leader, and an impactful Rhode Islander. We are grateful for his distinguished service as a sailor, statesman, and thoughtful diplomat. His contributions to the state as a businessman, author, artist, and community leader are many.
"As a diplomat and Navy secretary, he understood the importance of international relations, alliances, and the power of American values. I didn't always see eye to eye with Bill on every issue, but I always respected his scholarly insight and integrity, and appreciated his passion, wit, and self-effacing humor.
"Rhode Island and the nation have lost a faithful public servant and I have lost a friend. We salute both Bill and his late, great wife, Isabelle, for a life well lived and extend our condolences to their beloved children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family."
