CHICAGO (June 11, 2026) - As ComEd crews continue working around the clock to restore power to customers impacted by Wednesday's severe storms, forecasters are warning that another round of severe weather is expected later today into tonight. Storms this afternoon have already brough damaging wind gusts of greater than 60 mph, with at least one confirmed tornado. Later in the evening, large hail, frequent lightning and other severe conditions are expected, particularly across the central and southern portions of the service territory.
This comes on top of Wednesday's storms which brought intense rain, lightning and wind gusts of up to 72 mph recorded at Midway Airport, causing significant damage and leaving more than 485,000 customers without power. The hardest-hit areas include the southern portion of ComEd's service territory, from Crestwood to Chicago and Joliet to Alsip, where downed power lines and fallen trees caused widespread damage.
As of 6 p.m. Thursday, ComEd has already restored service to approximately 384,000 customers, with roughly 101,000 customers still without power currently. ComEd has brought in additional personnel, with more than 2,900 personnel working as quickly and safely as possible to bring every customer back online, and to help brace for additional weather moving into the area this evening.
"Our crews have been working nonstop in difficult conditions to restore service as quickly and safely as possible," said David Perez, executive vice president and COO of ComEd. "With additional severe weather on the way, we want our customers to know that we are fully prepared. Our teams will remain in the field and in our control centers, ready to respond to whatever comes next."
Massive Restoration Effort Underway
ComEd has mobilized a massive workforce to respond:
Established base camps in Schaumburg, Rockford, Chicago and Joliet to dispatch crews to aggressively increase restoration work there.
ComEd also activated its Mobile Command Center to support field operations and improve coordination across impacted areas.
Restoration Timeline
ComEd prioritizes repairs that restore the greatest number of customers first, followed by critical services such as hospitals, law enforcement, fire departments and senior centers, before moving to smaller neighborhoods and individual homes.
Currently we have restored 80 percent of customers impacted by the first storm period which began on Wednesday afternoon. Customers who remain without power from the Wednesday storms can expect to be fully restored by Saturday evening, if not sooner. ComEd will assess damages stemming from the current weather moving through the territory this evening and provide updates to customers who are impacted by any additional weather-related outages.
