Bergman Secures Victory for Michigan's School Resource Officers

In response to Lansing's $302 million cut to student mental health and safety resources in the Michigan state budget for FY 2025, Representative Jack Bergman introduced the School Resource Officer Funding Protection Act of 2024. The bill would require states to maintain or increase funding for school resource officer programs in order to remain eligible for full federal funding for elementary and secondary education.

Following the introduction of this legislation, lawmakers in Lansing restored $125 million of the cut funding, with Governor Whitmer signing that funding into law yesterday.

"While I'm glad our pressure campaign succeeded in forcing Governor Whitmer to restore $125 million in cut funding for student mental health and school safety, it's hardly surprising that Democrats in Lansing exploited this bipartisan issue for political gain. Ramming the bill through without allowing any debate before the vote and with poison pills attached, they once again showed that they care more about politicizing our students rather than keeping them safe at school," Rep. Bergman stated.
