Washington - U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas), joined Jon Scott on Fox News' Fox Report to discuss the shooting attempt at Mar-a-Lago and the heated rhetoric and hatred being spread by the media.

On the shooting attempt at Mar-a-Lago:

"Yeah, yeah, Jon, certainly the temperature is just too hot across the country. This is probably another emotionally unstable young man, probably mentally unhealthy as well. He's been missing for a while, and he picks up a shotgun somewhere. So we need to get we need to go back and kind of review the facts here. But I think what Congress needs to be focused on is, number one, realizing the Secret Service is funded through DHS. The Democrats want to stay focused on this defund the police policies of theirs. So this is one more example of why we need to fund DHS. And the next thing we need to focus on is just the political rhetoric out here. National media basically, what they try to do is get people mad - they appeal to your lowest emotions, they try to get people mad rather than reporting the news. And social media just jumps on the back of that and exacerbates it as well. So how do we turn down this political rhetoric? How do we stay focused on debating policies rather than attacking the person?"

On hatred and rhetoric in the media:

"Yeah, John, you nailed it: the word 'hatred.' Hatred is just a horrible word; it's a horrible emotion that creates people down to their lowest levels. So when you have people functioning at this lower emotional level, they can't separate right from wrong, reality from unreality. This is a psychosis; it's not just Trump derangement syndrome now. This is a full-blown psychosis. We see it more and more as we go across our states and meet people; we see this venom out there. And again, I'm just begging the national media, social media, turn your algorithms down. Your focus, this focus, of making people mad and making them hate is what leads to incidents like this."

On funding DHS and law enforcement:

"Yeah, this is going to come down to a negotiation between Chuck Schumer and President Trump. Let's face it, all the Democrats can hang on to is this defund the police policy, which doesn't work. You know, I think the American people 80/20 want law and order. So we have to stand tall as Republicans, and hopefully the political clamor from back home will get the Democrats to the negotiating table again and realize that we want to fund the police, that we want law and order, that we want to secure borders as well. So it may take some planes being held up as well because of the air traffic control people not getting their paychecks as well. So time will tell, it's disappointing."
