Updated Hydrogen Infrastructure Map shows adjustment of timeline for hydrogen projects’ commissioning

December 17, 2025

The updated Hydrogen Infrastructure Map is now available online and shows the evolving trends for the European hydrogen infrastructure across countries and sectors. While the number of projects planned remains steady, project promoters are adjusting the estimated starting dates, in some cases.

The mapped information is collected by using a bottom up approach and hydrogen project promoters were asked to submit new and updated project information by 17 October 2025. The projects represent infrastructure across the hydrogen value chain, including those projects for demand and production.

Key updates include:

  • Updated representation of the German transmission network, based on the German Hydrogen Core Network as approved in October 2024 by the Federal Network Agency.
  • Updated representation of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone 2030 and 2040.
  • Updated representation of the Austrian and German distribution network.
  • Extended transmission network in the Baltic / Nordic regions.

Furthermore, for this map update, project promoters were requested to undertake a review of the mapped information, in particular for their projects included when the map was first launched in December 2022. On the basis of this review, the estimated starting dates of some projects were adjusted, to commence at a later date. In some cases, discontinued projects identified by the promoters have been removed from the map.

The map also includes the Projects of Common Interest (PCI) / Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI) status of the hydrogen projects, based on the 2nd Union list under the revised Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E) Regulation published by the European Commission on 1 December 2025.

The involved associations - ENTSOG, GIE, Eurogas, CEDEC, GEODE, GD4S - aim to facilitate the update of the Hydrogen Infrastructure Map once a year, to ensure that it is a 'living' map comprising the most up-to-date status of the hydrogen projects network.

It should be noted that the map was first developed to address the European Commission's request to visualise "all hydrogen infrastructure projects collected under different existing processes in a form of a map" in their conclusions at the 36th European Gas Regulatory Forum in May 2022. The data and information collected are published for informative and indicative purposes only and does not reflect true-to-scale representation of the infrastructure. The mapped projects are based on the information provided by the project promoters.

The next update is planned for Q4 2026, which will include the submitted hydrogen projects as part of the TYNDP 2026 process.

We invite stakeholders to visit the updated map on the Hydrogen Infrastructure Map website.

Contributing organisations

Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) is the association representing the interests of European gas infrastructure operators active in gas transmission, gas storage and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification. GIE is a trusted partner of European institutions, regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders. It is based in Brussels, the heart of European policymaking. GIE currently represents 70 member companies from 26 countries. GIE's vision is that by 2050, the gas infrastructure will be the backbone of the new innovative energy system, allowing European citizens to benefit from a secure, efficient and sustainable energy supply.

CEDEC: CEDEC is the European Federation of local energy companies, representing the interests of 2000 local and regional energy and broadband companies across Europe, serving 100 million electricity, gas and district heating customers and broadband connections. Active in every part of the value chain - generation, distribution grids and supply - these companies provide services which are reliable, sustainable and close to the consumer, making a significant contribution to local and regional economic development.

ENTSOG: The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) was founded in 2009 and has played a key role in facilitating integration of the European gas markets, ensuring technical interoperability and providing security of supply by gas infrastructure planning. Looking forward, ENTSOG is contributing to the net-zero decarbonisation by 2050, in particular, by the integration of renewable and low carbon gases via future-proof gas transmission pipelines, in line with the EU energy and climate goals. More information on ENTSOG can be found on our website - entsog.eu or contact [email protected].

Eurogas: Eurogas is an association of over one hundred members representing gaseous energy in Europe. We lead the sector's transition to climate neutrality through dialogue with stakeholders and policymakers, so that gas can be effectively used for the decarbonisation of Europe's energy sector. We are active throughout the gas sector value chain, including renewable and low-carbon gases, their derivatives and carbon capture utilisation and storage. Our members cover wholesale and retail gas markets, the distribution of gaseous energies and the use of gas in transport. We also represent technology providers including companies active on value chain methane emissions management.

GD4S: Gas Distributors for Sustainability (GD4S) unites 12 leading distribution system operators (DSOs) from nine EU Member States-Greece (Enaon), France (GRDF), Ireland (GNI), Italy (Italgas), the Netherlands (Alliander, Enexis, Stedin), Poland (PSG), Portugal (Floene), Spain (Nedgia), and Romania (DGSR)-alongside the United Kingdom (Cadent). Together, GD4S members manage more than 929,500 kilometres of distribution networks and provide energy to over 60 million customers. As operators deeply embedded in local communities, GD4S members are committed to supporting the EU's net-zero ambition. They are enabling the large-scale deployment of renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen, ensuring that Europe's energy transition is secure, sustainable, and people-centred.

GEODE: GEODE is a European association representing local energy companies operating electricity and gas distribution networks committed to a sustainable, efficient and reliable management of the grids as the backbone of the energy system. Thanks to the technical expertise of its members, GEODE's mission is to accomplish the energy transition towards decentralised, decarbonised and digitalised energy systems.
