JJC Launches New Fire Academy

The Joliet Junior College (JJC) department of public services has launched in fall 2026 a new fire academy that prepares students for the Illinois state certification exam upon completion.

"The new fire academy was created in response to the growing regional need for firefighters and paramedics," said Patricia Binfa, department chair of public services at JJC. "Fire departments and EMS agencies throughout our area are looking for qualified professionals, and our goal is to help address those workforce needs by equipping students with the knowledge, skills and training needed to enter the public safety profession."

JJC's fire academy is a 16-week program with curriculum that aligns with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Students will earn a certificate of completion after successfully completing the academy. The certificate can be applied toward JJC's associate in applied science (AAS) in fire science degree.

"What is different about the new academy is that students will now have the opportunity to complete their OSFM-approved firefighter training and certification requirements directly through JJC in a structured cohort model. Previously, students typically obtained this training through external fire academies or departments. The academy creates a direct pathway for students to earn their BOF certification and then continue into the fire science AAS program if desired."

While JJC has a fire sciences program and an emergency medical services (EMS) program, the fire academy remains separate from EMS.

With a cap of 20 students each semester, the fire academy allows for smaller class sizes, among other benefits.

"The JJC fire science team is excited about the opportunities the academy will provide for students," Binfa said. "The academy will give students more hands-on training and a direct pathway into the profession while helping them build the skills and experience needed to be successful in the field. We are also looking forward to strengthening our partnerships with local fire departments and serving as a resource for the communities we support."

Applications for the spring 2027 fire academy are open Sept. 1-30.
