Epilepsy Training Event Set for Sept. 23-24

The NMU Center for Rural Health, the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan and NMU student organization 'Students for Epilepsy Advocacy and Mentorship' (SEAM) are partnering to co-host a two-night movie and training event to promote epilepsy awareness and education at 6 p.m. on September 23 and 24 in the Northern Center. The first night will be an advance screening of the new award-winning movie Under the Lights, the second, seizure recognition and first aid training.

The event provides representation and advocacy for those with epilepsy, as well as providing a hands-on first aid training workshop. Participants will learn to identify seizures, proper emergency and safety protocols, and when to consider calling emergency services.

"Epilepsy affects 1 in 26 people in the United States" said Matilda Schiewe, program manager. "Taking the time to complete Epilepsy Recognition and Seizure Recognition and First Aid training builds the awareness and skills needed to step up when you might be the only person who knows what to do."
