More than 200 community members gathered at Eventfinda Stadium last month to hear an update on the council's Wairau blue-green network project.
With two recent significant rain events, impacted communities expressed strong support for swift and decisive action.
After evaluating more than 100 flood mitigation options, the council's Transport, Resilience and Infrastructure Committee endorsed a business case in April to integrate flood storage with recreational facilities at AF Thomas Park.
The project aims to reduce downstream flood flow by 30 per cent, reducing flood risk across 10 hectares of homes as well as protecting critical infrastructure and access to key facilities such as North Shore Hospital and Westlake Boys and Girls High Schools.
The council is also working closely with Takapuna Golf Club to complete a feasibility assessment of an alternative proposal to retain an 18-hole golf course while incorporating flood storage by lowering and reshaping parts of the existing course.
Once the council identifies the most feasible design for flood detention in AF Thomas Park, work will begin with Kaipātiki Local Board, council's Parks and Community Facilities, mana whenua, and local communities to determine the integrated recreational facilities for the remaining park area, including the potential for ongoing golf provision.
You can download a copy of the presentation and learn more about the project on the council website.
