Cape May County OEM Advises Residents of Potential Coastal Flooding from Hurricane Erin

Cape May Court House, NJ - The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management, under the direction of County Coordinator Chris Leusner and Commissioner Director Len Desiderio, is advising residents of oceanfront and bayside communities to prepare for the potential impacts of Hurricane Erin. Although the storm remains several hundred miles offshore, tidal surge and strong onshore winds are expected to create flooding concerns, particularly along the Delaware Bay and barrier island communities.

The National Weather Service - Mount Holly Office has issued Coastal Flood Warnings for Cape May County. Forecasts indicate a peak surge of 1 to 3 feet in the Delaware Bay, which may impact low-lying areas of bayside communities in Middle Township, Dennis Township, and surrounding areas.

The highest risk of flooding will occur during the Thursday evening high tide at approximately 8:30 PM, when tide levels are forecast to reach 6.5 feet above Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW).

In addition to tidal flooding, the area will experience:

• Sustained northeast winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

• Hazardous marine conditions, with seas building to 10-17 feet offshore.

• A high risk of rip currents and dangerously high surf through Friday.

Residents in flood-prone areas should take immediate precautions.

"If you live in a low-lying area prone to flooding, please take the appropriate precautions now. Move your vehicles to higher ground and secure outdoor furniture and other items that could be damaged or carried by water or wind," said Desiderio.

Safety Recommendations:

• Relocate vehicles and valuables from flood-prone streets and driveways.

• Secure outdoor items such as trash cans, grills, and patio furniture.

• Avoid driving through floodwater, as road closures are possible during

peak tides.

• Stay tuned to official weather updates and local emergency

management alerts.

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions in coordination with the National Weather Service and provide updates as needed.
