Like Mother, Like Daughter

In 2014, Nelo Afzali '26 celebrated her mom's graduation from Siena; twelve years later they switched roles, but not poses.

Mara Afzali '14 and her husband both graduated from Siena as non-traditional students, though five years apart. Javid Afzali '09 went first, and when their youngest child was five, it was Mara's turn. She enrolled at Siena as a mother of four, in the thick of raising a family, but determined to earn her political science degree. Naturally it was a juggle, but Mara made her Siena education a family affair.

"Having the opportunity to watch my parents go through the whole process of college was really inspiring to me when I was younger," said Nelo, their oldest. "I had already experienced undergrad through their eyes, such as tagging along to mock trial practices and having homework parties with my mom in the Standish Library."

On a sunny, mid-May day in 2014, Mara crossed the Commencement stage and proudly posed for a picture (above, left) with two of her children, including Nelo, standing to the right. Who was prouder? The feeling of that day lingered.

"I honestly cannot imagine completing undergrad while also raising four kids the way they did," Nelo said.

It was an obvious choice for Nelo to attend Siena, like her parents. She chose philosophy, but with a pre-law certificate. Mara is a member at the law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC and a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army Reserves. In the fall, Nelo will pursue her J.D. at Albany Law School.

This past weekend, Nelo, her mom, and sister struck the same pose 12 years later (above, right). This time Nelo's wearing the cap and gown, with her mom at her side. Who was prouder?

"Watching Nelo walk across the same stage I did was a really special moment," said Mara. "She was with me every step of the way, and I am so happy to have the opportunity to celebrate her accomplishments this time around."
