University of California Reaffirms Commitment to Fair Negotiations Amid UPTE Strike Plans

The University of California strongly disagrees with UPTE's decision to call a strike on November 17 and 18 - an action that will disrupt students, patients, and the vital research that benefits communities across California. This strike is both unnecessary and irresponsible, particularly after UC made every effort over 17 months of bargaining and three weeks of intensive mediation to reach a fair and competitive agreement.

UC has consistently demonstrated flexibility and good faith throughout this process - offering up to 7% in the first year of the contract, stipends for health insurance premiums, and increased vacation-use protections, to recognize the valuable contributions of UPTE-represented employees. Unfortunately, instead of working toward compromise, UPTE's leadership has chosen confrontation over collaboration. Walking away from mediation and resorting to a strike does nothing to resolve the issues at hand - it only delays progress and harms the very people the union claims to support.

UC remains committed to reaching a balanced, sustainable contract that rewards employees while preserving the University's ability to deliver on its mission of teaching, research, and public service. The University urges UPTE's leaders to return to the bargaining table and engage constructively - not to stage costly and disruptive demonstrations.

UC values its professional and technical employees and deeply respects their service. But progress requires partnership, not ultimatums.
