Community Invited to Workshops with Artist in Residence Jose Bacarreza

Published on Friday, 19 September 2025 at 9:23:35 AM

Following the success of this year's Art Prize exhibition, which remains open at the Goldfields Arts Centre until 17 October, the City is inviting the community to continue their arts experience by taking part in free upcoming workshops and open studios with Artist in Residence Jose Bacarreza.

Jose will be opening his studio doors for residents to see his creative process up close, ask questions, and learn about his internationally recognised practice. He will also deliver a special Library Talk during his stay:

  • Open Studios at Goldfields Arts Centre
    • Thursday 25 September, 12pm - 3pm
    • Thursday 2 October, 12pm - 3pm
  • Library Talk at William Grundt Memorial Library
    • Wednesday 1 October, 10am

For those unable to attend the scheduled sessions, alternative times can be arranged directly with the Centre.

Mayor Glenn Wilson encouraged the community to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

"These events come hot on the heels of the 2025 Art Prize exhibition, which has been a reminder of just how strong and diverse the arts are in Kalgoorlie-Boulder," Mayor Wilson said.

"The residency is about keeping that momentum going - giving our community more chances to engage with artists directly and making creativity part of everyday life here in the Goldfields."

"Jose isn't just exhibiting his finished works - he's letting people step inside the process, and whether you're an artist yourself or just curious, there's something really inspiring about watching creativity unfold right in front of you. I'd encourage everyone to come along and be part of it," he said.

Jose is the first Artist in Residence for 2025, as part of the City's three-year Artist in Residence Program at the Goldfields Arts Centre.

Originally from Chile and now based in Perth, he is renowned for his large-scale oil paintings that explore the intersections between human consciousness and the natural world. Influenced by Renaissance and Baroque masters, as well as modern greats such as JoaquĆn Sorolla and Jenny Saville, his works have been exhibited internationally - including War and Hope at the WA Maritime Museum and The Cave at the Puri Lukisan Museum in Bali.

The City's Artist in Residence Program runs through to 2027, offering opportunities for artists across disciplines to live, work, and share their practice with the community. Artists interested in future residencies are invited to submit an Expression of Interest through the City's website.

The Program is supported by the Western Australian Government through the Regional Arts Venues Support program and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
