WARRENDALE, Pa. (December 20, 2024) - The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium™ (AVSC), a program of SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (SAE ITC®), just published the AVSC Best Practice for Automated Driving System-Dedicated Vehicles (ADS-DVs) Safety Inspection Framework. This best practice defines a process for creating, maintaining, and documenting a safety inspection protocol. It provides a classification for ADS-DV subsystems and components, a list of minimum inspection elements, and a perspective on the types of triggers that can initiate inspections. It provides an illustrative example of the lifecycle of a safety inspection protocol and how inspections may change at each stage.
Automated driving system-dedicated vehicle (ADS-DV) manufacturers, developers, and operators need to design, maintain and implement a clearly defined and traceable safety inspection protocol. Well-defined and broadly applicable classification of components, subsystems and inspection triggers can facilitate the communication of safety inspection related information. Such a framework will help build public trust and promote industry standardization.
"This best practice fills a need in the industry by defining a process for designing and evaluation of safety inspection protocols for autonomous vehicles. It is another step towards standardization of terminology around safety inspections, with the end goal of increasing public trust in AVs as a viable means of transportation." - Darcyne Foldenauer AVSC Director
