The University of Toledo will be celebrating Filipino American Heritage Month this October highlighting the importance of language, food and dance in Filipino American culture.
"I'm incredibly proud of my heritage and grateful to have the UToledo Filipino American Association (UTFAA) on campus. They have helped me connect to my Filipino heritage in ways I would have never imagined before attending the University," said Jillian Micua, president of the Filipino American Association. "Every Filipino American History Month I like to reflect on my own family's story. My identity as a Filipino American and the culture I was raised in have deeply shaped my character and worldview."
The month kicks off with a Dance Workshop and General Body Meeting hosted by the Filipino American Association on Thursday at 7 p.m.
This year, the UTFAA is hosting two events to celebrate the month.
• Thursday, October 2, from 7 to 8 p.m. - Dance Workshop and General Body Meeting in Thompson Student Union Room 2582. Learn more about the UTFAA while exploring the history of certain Filipino traditional dances.
• Wednesday, October 15, noon to 2 p.m. - Filipino American Heritage Month Tabling in Thompson Student Union, table B. Explore the history and experiences of Filipino Americans in the United States while enjoying sago't gulaman, a popular street dessert drink.
