UFCW Condemns Supreme Court Ruling on Temporary Protected Status

"The effects of this ruling will be felt by more than just those directly impacted - every worker, every community, and the entire economy will feel it."

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.2 million essential workers across North America, released a statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling that allows the Trump Administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians and Syrians, and risks Temporary Protected Status for immigrants of all nationalities.

UFCW International President Milton Jones said:

"Immigrant workers have been the backbone of our country's economy and our food system for decades. Yesterday's Supreme Court decision upends the lives of thousands of immigrant workers and families under Temporary Protected Status and denies them the stability they have worked hard to achieve. Many of them have built their lives here and become the friends, neighbors, and coworkers that we rely on.

"The effects of this ruling will be felt by more than just those directly impacted - every worker, every community, and the entire economy will feel it. It jeopardizes worker and food safety in meatpacking plants, food processing facilities, and grocery stores, with workers left behind being pushed to their limit without the skilled hands of their immigrant coworkers next to them. Labor shortages that have long plagued these industries will also be worsened, leading to higher prices for families trying to put food on the table.

"The Supreme Court has empowered the Trump Administration to expand its cruel and dangerous immigration policies. While this ruling immediately impacts hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants, it also creates extreme uncertainty for nearly a million additional TPS holders. The ripple effect of this could be felt throughout the country as families and communities are uprooted, including some who have been here for decades.

"The Administration has the power to give Haitian and Syrian TPS holders more time before forcing them to leave their homes. Families have to prioritize their safety as much as possible during this chaotic time, as they are being forced to return to countries they fled due to political unrest, natural disasters, and violence. Giving them space to plan is the bare minimum in the face of this inhumane immigration policy."
