The City of Toledo announced that the collapsed 48-inch sewer main on Arlington Avenue must be replaced rather than repaired during a press conference on Thursday. Crews have been preparing to repair the pipe since July, but after further evaluation it has been determined that the condition of the pipe is beyond repair.
The updated project scope includes the replacement of the sewer main from Francis Avenue to Woodsdale Avenue. The change increases the overall project budget to $16 million and extends the anticipated completion date to June 2026.
"We know this is not the news residents want to hear, and we understand how disruptive this has been for the community," Doug Stephens, Director of Public Utilities, said. "But we are committed to doing this right. A full replacement is the safest, most reliable long-term solution for our infrastructure and our residents."
The collapsed sewer has required significant investigation and planning to ensure the solution both stabilizes the area and provides long-term reliability. While the updated timeline represents a challenge, the city said it is confident the investment will improve safety, protect homes and businesses, and strengthen critical infrastructure for decades to come.
Following the sewer replacement, the City also plans to move forward with the full reconstruction of Arlington Avenue from Detroit Avenue to Spencer Avenue in 2026.
