The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) notified the City of Concord that E. coli bacteria were detected in the City of Kannapolis drinking water system. A small portion of City of Concord customers in areas north of I-85 and NC-73 receive their water from Kannapolis. Because of this, the City is issuing a boil water notice effective immediately for the 419 customers who are served by City of Kannapolis water.
The boil water notice only applies to this small portion of Concord's 46,000 total water customers. No action is needed for Concord customers outside the impacted areas north of I-85 and NC-73.
Impacted customers with phone numbers on file are being directly contacted by the City, and customers can refer to the City's website with maps showing the impacted areas. Only the 419 customers within the red areas of the attached map are under the boil water notice. All other City of Concord customers are unaffected and do not need to boil their water.
Customers are encouraged to review the Boil Water Notice on the City's website at concordnc.gov/BoilWaterNotice for specific information on what this means and what to do, including:
Affected customers can pick up free bottled water from the City of Kannapolis Fire Department Logistics Building located at 933 Floyd Street in Kannapolis. The water distribution is available through 8 p.m. tonight.
The Cabarrus Health Alliance also has a health information line, 704-920-1213, open tonight until 9 p.m. and it will be active again tomorrow, April 25, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Information to assist impacted customers, including frequently asked questions, is also available on their website.
Additionally, the boathouse at Lake Fisher receives drinking water from the City of Kannapolis. As a result, the City of Concord is closing Lake Fisher on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.
