Craig C. Martin, Chairman, Americas, was featured in a Law360 article "How Nonprofit Service Serves Law Leaders," in which law firm leaders share insight into why they've chosen to serve on nonprofit boards and how the experience has shaped their professional careers.
Craig and other leaders discuss how serving on the boards of nonprofits is more than just a philanthropic footnote to their legal practice-it makes them better attorneys, teaching executive governance and providing opportunities to network with potential colleagues or clients.
The article highlights Craig's extensive nonprofit involvement and leadership in the community, including the many boards he has served on over the course of his career. This spring he will add chair of the board of directors of the Lyric Opera of Chicago to the list.
"Lawyers have an obligation to commit to the communities in which they live," Craig told Law360. "It's that simple."
Craig is a prominent member of Chicago's civic community. He currently serves on the Aspen Institute board of trustees, Executive Committee and chairs its Audit & Risk Committee. He also serves on the Lyric Opera of Chicago board of directors' Executive Committee and chairs its Nominating and Governance Committees. Additionally, Craig serves on the boards of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, Crown Family Philanthropies, Chicago Urban League, Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and World Business Chicago. He is a member of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago, Economic Club of Chicago, and National Association of Corporate Directors.
